7/13/02:
Chance stood again last night! Her temperature went right up, so I gave her aspirin, which brought it back down. But she's trying, and that's the best I can hope for at this point. She is now eating the Foal-Lac pellets mixed with grain. I would like to now get Chance weaned off the powdered milk replacer, but she really doesn't prefer plain ol' water. Will keep working on that. The small mouth ulcers are gone now, and the large one is healing nicely. The pressure sores are looking much better, though not gone. I keep treating them, but Chance is still on them, and that hinders the healing process. All of this is just taking a lot of time. But BOY she is gaining weight and feels better.
GREAT NEWS! You gotta see these
PHOTOS! I got a photo of Chance standing- TODAY! She's on a roll guys! I have to prod her to get up, and she doesn't stay up long, but do you think that bothers me??? Nope! I thought I would also show you something interesting. You can always tell any dietary changes in a horse by the growth of their hooves. I took this PIC of one of Chance's hooves last week, so you can see what I mean. You see a DISTINCT line, where the new hoof growth is. Notice how the old hoof is dry. I don't know if the picture shows it, but there are tiny lines running all down. The new growth has plenty of moisture, is very supple, and you can tell that Chance has been getting much needed nutrition.
7/14/02: Today was another great day. Chance was in very good spirits, stood a couple of times, and even volunteered three steps the first time! Today was much cooler, the humidity was way down, and we both felt better healthwise. I entered a photo of Chance in an online contest, and she won today! (Thanks to all of you who voted for her.) It was a pic of her nursing the goat. I also got the new message board up and running finally. I would love to see you all get some conversations going. I have gotten sooo many emails, guestbook posts, and messages posted on other boards. All asking questions and/or offering support and encouragement. I have found you all to be so wonderful, and I just think you should "meet" one another! I'll be checking the board very regularly as well, so I'll be able to answer any questions and such.
I didn't mention this, but a couple of days ago my dog got kicked by a mare, who's here getting bred to one of our stallions. Anyway, it broke her leg. Thankfully, a friend was here, and since I don't drive, Becky rushed Pinky right in to the vet. She had xrays, surgery, and a pin was put in. The whole point to this was, hehehe, that I got a cute
pic of the two of them. Jeez, between these two, and me with my cane, we're a pretty mottly looking crew right now! And of course there's Lips, the chicken with the crooked beak! And Gimpy, the rooster with the funny-looking feet, and........ *grin* The rest are "normal!"
One more thing. Chance's ulcer is looking so much better that I took a pic today to compare with the one taken about 3 weeks ago.
Amazing improvement! Okay, I'm done rambling. It's nearly 2am, Dave flies out early and will be gone for the week, so I need all the rest I can get! G'nite all!
7/15/02: Here's a new pic of one of Chance's hooves. Her eye is all goopy this morning, so I've started putting antibiotic ointment in it again. This is the "good" eye. Temp is elevated a bit. More aspirin into the milk. Other than that, Chance is in good spirits and eating well this morning. Boy, just when you think you're getting ahead of this stuff, something flairs up somewhere else. But don't worry, we've got it under control, hehehe... Will post more later...
7/16/02: Well, I didn't get to write more last evening , so here's the update now. Yesterday Chance's good eye started filling with yellow pus. Though it wasn't watering, and she wasn't holding it closed. I got antibiotic ointment into it right away, and several more times. Now this morning it's bright as usual. Seeing all the birds with Chance this morning gave me an idea. So I put a collage of photos together, of her and her many friends. As you can see, she's never lonely!
So- here's where we stand now. Chance is no longer nursing goats, and I have her drinking Foal-Lac from a feed pan, so no bottles. Still getting shots twice a day, treating pressure sores (ongoing battle), excersizing her muscles/tendons a few times a day, oh and she's getting MSM and aspirin in her milk. Free choice hay, and she's getting fed milk and a cup or two of grain (with Foal-Lac pellets and Fastrack probiotic mixed in) every 2 1/2-3 hours, from 6:30am til about 1am. Then goes through the night (5 hrs or so). Chance is gotten up 2-4 times a day, depending on the weather and how she feels. On hot days she has no energy, on cooler days and when her temperature is normal, she has more energy.
Looks like the next post will be on a new page. Til then!
